Earning credit at Edge High School is a little different than other schools. Our self-paced program allows you to earn credit when you reach 70% mastery in a single course, not at the end of a quarter or semester like a traditional high school. That’s what makes our program so flexible – you can complete classes, earn credit, and graduate on your timeline.
Over the last 30 years, we’ve helped countless students find success, and we’ve learned a few things about how they made it happen. While there is no magic formula, there are some tried and true steps that make it easy to earn credit at Edge. Here’s 7 bits of wisdom from our teachers and students that can help you find success, too:
1. Have good attendance. Showing up is literally the first step. You cannot earn credit if you are not participating in classes everyday and making progress on your courses.
2. Know the pace you should be working at in each class. To earn a year’s worth of credit at Edge you need to complete courses in 8-12 weeks on average. If you are in need of credit recovery, then you need to complete courses in less time.
3. Ask your teacher if you don’t know the pace you should be working at. At Edge students are expected to complete at least 1 lesson per day per class. Knowing the pace you should work at each day will help you better manage your time in and out of class.
4. Meet your daily goals! Once you know the pace you should be working each day, do not let anything distract you from completing them. Avoid distractions like TV, social media, cell phones, and other people. Ensure that each day you complete your daily goal. Once you get in the habit of completing your daily goals you will see how simple credit earning can be.
5. Hold yourself accountable if you don’t meet your daily goals! You are human which means you will have good days and bad days. On days you don’t meet your daily goal by the end of your class period, hold yourself accountable by finding time in the rest of the day to finish your work. Simply put, make sure by the start of that class the next day you have met your daily goal. Treat any unmet daily goal as required homework before the next day.
6. Don’t view your school day as simply 4 periods. In order to recover credit you are occasionally going to need to put in more than 4 periods of school work. Be proactive and schedule a few extra hours a week outside of your class time to work on schoolwork. Our recommendation is to dedicate 5-7 hours per week outside of your school day to work on courses.
7. Make the most use of your teacher! Our alumni agree that this is the key to success at Edge. Even when you don’t necessarily think you need it, check in with your teachers on your progress and your pacing. Our teachers are here to provide one-on-one support to each student
Everything is easier when you have a plan – even graduating from high school. Whether you are bored with the pace of a traditional school and want to graduate early or you need to catch up on credits, you can earn credits on your timeline and make it to graduation. You’ve got this! 💪
