Edge tuition-free charter school students participating in Design Day airplane challenge

Edge High School provides an alternative to traditional high schools. We offer flexible schedules, individualized learning plans, and the support to help you succeed. But we also believe that learning should be FUN! Sometimes that means leaving our regular school day schedule to work – and play – with classmates and teachers.

Design Day

On Friday, May 13, all EDGE students were invited to participate in Design Day – an annual event that brings students and staff together to solve design challenges. Working as individuals or in small teams, our students build and test a project that relies on creativity and teamwork skills as well as problem-solving abilities.

Sounds tough? It can be, but making mistakes is not only ok – it’s part of the process! We learned that designers’ initial ideas rarely end up being the ones that ultimately solve the problem. Instead, they must try different ideas, learn from their mistakes, and try again. We also learned about career fields that use the design process – making connections between the skills that were required by each challenge and ideas for future employment goals.

This year’s Design Day focused on two projects:

  • Float Your Boat

Using the process of trial and error, we worked in small groups to build a boat out of aluminum foil and then tested it to see which boat would hold the most mass in a tub of water. Each group received a list of rules around boat construction, and the winning boat held 140 pennies!

  • Paper Airplane Challenge

We worked together to build paper airplanes with the goal of flying them across the length of a classroom. Everyone shared their ideas for achieving the goal and tried out ideas together. At the end of the day, we came together to debrief and share thoughts on what worked and didn’t work. We even linked our learning to activities in our daily lives, like the importance of planning ahead and the value of listening to other people’s ideas.

Field Day

Edge Field Day is another annual event that gets us out of our classrooms to have fun each spring. It gives all of us the chance to celebrate the traditional school year coming to an end, show some school pride and spend a day with friends and peers being active. On Friday, May 6 we gathered off campus to challenge ourselves with outdoor games and activities. Edge students, teachers and staff competed alongside each other in an informal atmosphere that celebrated everyone. It was a relaxed and fun day, and we are already looking forward to next year.
