10 Edge High School students jumping in front of an outdoor mural that spells out “Be Kind” in tiles”

‘Tis the season for resolutions. You know the drill: whether it’s fitness goals, lifestyle changes, or new habits, resolutions remind us that what we’re doing is not enough. And for most of us, we’ll have broken our New Year’s resolutions by February

How can we make this year different? At Edge High School, we are a tuition-free public school that prioritizes the social and emotional health of our students as well as academic learning. Being a part of the Edge community means finding support from teachers, staff, counselors, and your peers. When you enroll here, your teachers and staff will work with you to create an individualized learning plan that supports your graduation and life goals – including your intention! Wondering how to get started? Here are four keys to get you there!

1. Start Small

An intention is the starting point for every dream. Thousands of years ago, sages in India observed that our destiny is ultimately shaped by our deepest intentions and desires. Unlike a resolution, which attempts to correct what’s wrong with your life, an intention creates abundance and inspires you to live even better.

An intention is a small agreement with yourself that you can make every day. Just take a moment when you’re in a quiet place – before class, on a bus, when you first wake up in the morning – and just simply remind yourself of your intention. Here are some examples for inspiration:

  • “I am a committed Edge student – I come to school every day.”
  • “I am a healthy person – I nurture myself with positive thoughts and kind words.”
  • “I am a work in progress – I am in the process of becoming the best version of myself and I accept this stage in my journey.”

2. Begin Anytime

You don’t need a specific day of the year to set an intention. January might be, for you, a terrible time to try something new. That’s OK! Overhauling your life with a resolution on January 1 and sticking with those changes forever is a tall order. Try changing the timeline, and set an intention when you are ready. And if you need to start again? Go for it. Each new day is a clean slate!

3. Be Kind to Yourself

Intentions change the narrative. Instead of punishing yourself with resolutions that feel impossible to keep, an intention reminds you that you ARE enough, right now! It’s a simple sentence that you tell yourself each day that reminds you what you’re doing right, and reinforces your desire to continue on that path.

4. Let the Universe Handle the Details

An intention is a seed that grows life changes. Like real seeds, intentions can’t grow if you hold on to them. Setting your intention hands it over to the power of the universe to make the next steps. Trust that power and don’t listen to the voice that says that you have to be in charge. The outcome that you try so hard to force may not be as good for you as the one that comes naturally. When you release your intention into the universe, it will bloom when the time is right.

Are you ready to set an intention for 2023? Edge is here to support you! We hope you’ll share your intentions with your teachers and staff – because we’re setting them too!
