At Edge High School, we’re embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a powerful learning tool that can enhance learning. We’re committed to helping our students use AI responsibly to enhance learning, foster critical thinking, and prepare for a rapidly changing world.
Edge’s Approach to AI
Edge believes responsible engagement with AI is part of developing digital citizenship. In response to this incredible tool, we’ve developed a policy that outlines our expectations for using this tool and the responsibilities of our students. Our policy empowers students to use AI to improve learning outcomes while developing AI literacy, critical thinking about AI-generated outputs, and understanding of ethical implications. Students learn to communicate their AI use through transparency statements or citations, building a school culture of thoughtful, ethical AI use.
How Students Can Use AI to Enhance Their Learning
What does proper use of AI look like in practice? Students can use AI tools to:
- Brainstorm ideas for writing assignments
- Get feedback and suggestions for improvement on completed writing
- Help organize ideas and content
- Clarify concepts and content you find challenging
- Simplify complex content or provide summaries
- Practice and review skills and knowledge
Spiderman’s Uncle Ben wisely said that “with great power comes great responsibility”, which we think applies equally as well to technology as it does superhero battles. Edge students are responsible for using this powerful tool in an ethical manner that enhances their learning and growth. As such, students may not:
- Copy content directly from AI
- Use AI to get answers to assignments, quizzes, or tests
- Submit personally identifying information to AI platforms
- Rely completely on AI for assignments without personal engagement
- Plagiarize or cheat using AI tools
- Omit disclosure of AI use in the “AI Credits” section
- Misuse AI tools to disrupt the learning environment or create materials that violate Edge’s codes of conduct
Important Requirements
All students must include a transparency statement or citation in any work involving AI. For example: “I used Google Gemini to help organize my outline and brainstorm examples, but all writing is my own.”
Unless directed otherwise, all written assignments must be composed in a Google Doc shared with your teacher. This helps teachers understand your writing process and ensures academic integrity.
If you’re ever unsure whether AI use is allowed for a specific assignment, or if you are unclear on how to use it well, ask a teacher. We’re here to help you learn how to use this tool and we’ll work together to navigate its best uses. Remember, AI is a tool in your toolbox, but you’re still the builder of your success!
