Students working together on Design Day challenge

“Fun, cool, and challenging”

“Best day of the year”

– Design Day student surveys

Edge High School is committed to nontraditional learning. We offer flexible schedules and customized curriculum that helps every student succeed. But we also believe that learning should be FUN!

Sometimes that means taking our students out of a traditional classroom setting to work together in new ways. On December 3rd, all EDGE students were invited to participate in Design Day – an annual event that brings students and staff together to solve design challenges.

The Egg Drop Challenge tasked students to build a protective structure that would prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from the roof of our school. Using balloons, drinking straws, rubber bands, paper bags, and toilet paper rolls, students got creative and 5 groups succeeded in keeping their eggs intact! Principal Rob Pecharich served as official egg dropper, and Brooke and Carla unveiled the winners. Congratulations all!

Students also participated in a Marshmallow Challenge, to see who could build the tallest structure in 20 minutes by only using one marshmallow, masking tape, string and spaghetti. The project seemed simple at first, but there were a lot of challenges in keeping the structures from collapsing. By using creative thinking and innovation, students succeeded by problem solving along the way – learning that an initial plan often needs to be tweaked and changed to get to the desired result. Want to find out more? There’s actually an entire TED Talk around the Marshmallow Challenge, and the surprising lessons that can be learned from it!
