Edge 101
To help you figure out how to navigate our school (and learn some tips for how to succeed here) we created “Edge 101”. Edge 101 is an elective course at our Himmel Park campus that earns you credit while you learn about Edge! Here’s what we cover.
How Credit Earning Works
A lot of our students have no idea how many high school credits they have earned when they first start at Edge, and you may be surprised to find out that you are further along than you think. Unlike traditional high schools, Edge students earn credit when they are able to submit work that earns a 70% or better. That means that you don’t have to wait until the end of a quarter or semester to earn credit – you can do it at your own pace. And you don’t have to stick to a traditional classroom – you can earn credit by volunteering in the community, taking a yoga or art class outside of school, or by working at a job. In Edge 101, we’ll cover the different ways you can earn credit and graduate.
Easy Steps to Success
Whether you want to graduate early or catch up on credits and graduate on a timeline that works for you, we’ll share tips that will make it a little easier to reach your goals. From good attendance to holding yourself accountable to making the best use of your teacher – in Edge 101 you’ll learn easy steps to be successful based on the experience of other Edge students.
Mental Health Awareness
At Edge, we get that everyone needs help sometimes. Edge 101 will help you understand the resources that are available to you to support your mental health. We destigmatize talking about mental health and you’ll learn what it means to say that Edge is a Shame Free Zone, and a safe space for you to share your worries with our staff. We’ll also cover the importance of self-compassion – how you can be gentle with yourself and feel happier and more confident as a result.
Identifying Your Mindset
You’ve probably heard of people who are “Street Smart” or “Book Smart”. But did you know there are lots of different ways that people are smart? We teach Growth Mindsets and the science behind it – which means that even if you struggle with certain skills, your abilities aren’t set in stone. In Edge 101 we’ll help you discover your strengths and your unique learning style, and give you a fresh start with academics.
