Portrait of Nick Basalyga

Edge counselors work with our students every day to help chart a path towards success that values individual goals. They support students academically, personally and socially – from resources to help achieve graduation to just lending a friendly ear, our counselors are here for you!

This year Edge welcomes a new member to our counseling team at the Northwest campus – Nick Basalyga. To get to know him better, we asked Nick some questions and here’s what he had to say. The next time you’re on campus, drop in and say hi to Nick – he’s looking forward to meeting you!

When did you know you wanted to be a social worker?

I was inspired to get into the field after personally working with a social worker and experiencing the profound impact that they can have on someone’s life.

What made you decide to pursue a career as a school mental health counselor?

I’ve worked as a social worker in school settings before Edge and have always been drawn to the environment. The amount of in-school time during the week creates much opportunity to connect and collaborate with students on the changes that they want to make in their lives.

Who was your favorite teacher and why?

I’ve had so many influential teachers over the years. Dr. Tully, a professor from my undergraduate program, stands out as someone who has supported and encouraged me to take steps forward in my career as a social worker. My youth soccer coach was also a great influence and teacher.

How do you practice self-care?

Anything that moves and nourishes my mind, body, and soul. I enjoy cooking, being outside and active – biking, running, playing soccer, hiking, and practicing yoga – and experiencing music and art.

What’s something that always makes you smile?

Seeing kindness and generosity shared between people always puts a smile on my face 🙂

What else would you like us to know about YOU?

I’m an East Coast transplant, originally from Scranton, Pennsylvania.
