Edge tuition free charter high school students raising hands while sitting at classroom desks

You may know Edge High School as a tuition-free charter school that helps our students catch up on their work through credit recovery. Or you may have heard about our individualized learning and support programs that can help you stay on pace and achieve your graduation goals with the support and resources you need. But you may not know that we are committed to helping our students try new things – including academic subjects that may not be familiar to them.

This year Edge math teachers LaGail Pearson and Julia Norland are hosting STEM for Girls – an elective that includes a conference, special outings and relevant guest speakers. The class is open to any female-identifying student at Edge Himmel Park. And it’s popular! We currently have 14 students enrolled.

What’s different?

Lots of our students haven’t had the opportunity to do a lot of hands-on STEM activities prior to coming to Edge. But our teachers are finding that STEM for Girls is helping our female-identifying students feel more confident in participating in STEM activities and learning new things. We want every student to feel comfortable diving in to solve problems – together as a group and on their own.

What do we do?

Each week our STEM for Girls students are participating in hands-on activities to help get them more familiar and comfortable with the design and build aspects of STEM. So far we have built bridges and towers from cups, tape, and popsicle sticks. In the coming weeks we will be building self-propelled cars, finding their velocity and testing the efficacy of different designs.

In March we’ll be taking a group of STEM for Girls students to the SheTech Explorer Day at the Tucson Convention Center.  It’s a fun one-day event where our Edge STEM team will try out hands-on activities and meet women-identifying professionals from a variety of backgrounds and industries. SheTech is a great capstone to the course and a fun day for our students!
