If you spend some time looking at our website or walking through the hallways of Edge High School, you’ll probably see our motto “Be You, With Us” – it’s hard to miss it! “Be You, With Us” means a lot of things to our students. It means that you are welcome to be yourself here. It means that YOU are our priority. It means that you can be as independent as you want – from the flexible schedule that supports your life circumstances to the self-paced learning model that supports your graduation goals.
But it also means that we are here for you. Our caring teachers who genuinely want you to succeed, and our supportive staff who check in with you daily to see how you are doing. To learn a little more about the “Us” in our motto, we reached out to Taava Church, our Special Education Teacher at Edge’s Northwest campus.
When did you know you wanted to be an educator?
I was literally born to be an educator. Both of my grandmothers were teachers, my mother and father were teachers and even my twin brother is a teacher!
What is your role at Edge?
I teach and support students with learning differences. My students have disabilities which may make learning difficult, and I go into their classes to support their success. I consult with their teachers and provide individual instruction when needed. These same students also have incredible gifts and talents which amaze me on a daily basis. There are artists, musicians, designers and builders to name just a few.
Who was your favorite teacher and why?
My fourth grader teacher Mrs. Stern was probably my most favorite teacher. She celebrated the individuality of each student and made learning fun.
How does Edge’s mission and vision align with your personal values?
Having worked in a traditional public school for 28 years, I embraced the opportunity to work at Edge as it truly values each student and understands that not all students learn in the same way. Students may need alternate strategies to learn and alternate outcomes to demonstrate mastery of content. Edge also creates an inclusive school community, focused on student learning and success. At Edge, all students are embraced at the front door and accepted as they are unlike traditional schools where many are lost between the cracks.
What do you love most about your role?
I love the students, the staff and the fact that we actually spend time discussing strategies for the success of each student. We think outside the box and strive to meet the individual needs of all students.
What else would you like us to know about YOU?
I love to read, go on road trips and work in my butterfly garden.
