Two Edge high school students pointing to book they're reading for book club and smiling

📚Have you ever finished a book and thought, “I have to tell someone about this!”?

📚Ever been left with more questions than answers to a mystery book you couldn’t put down?

📚Do you daydream about the perfect snacks to pair with your favorite drama?

📚Or have you ever gone in search of a recommendation for a book just like the one you just finished?

If you’ve ever had any of these bookish thoughts, Edge Book Club is the place for you.

Edge Book Club meets weekly and is a fun, safe space where students of all reading abilities gather to read, learn, and discuss ideas. We are a student-centered club – student members are  involved in most aspects of the management and direction of the club.

The most important rule about Book Club is that Book Club should never feel like work – it’s fun! We enjoy thoughtful discussions, play games, create art projects, and even plan local trips and fundraisers! We recently went on a field trip to Old Tucson Studios to immerse ourselves in the sights and sounds of the Western literature we’ve been reading.

Mostly, we love to hang out together and talk about what we are reading – it’s where the magic happens. Oh, and there’s usually food, which is easily every member’s favorite thing about Book Club. We like to hold themed potlucks and bring foods that correspond to the books we read.

Book club books are chosen through a voting process. We collect surveys that ask members what they would like to read. Members make suggestions and then share a “book commercial” to convince us to choose their book. Then we undergo rounds of discussion and voting until we’ve narrowed it down to our selection. We also try to mix things up so we are exposed to a variety of literature, genres and viewpoints.

Here are a few sample titles we’ve enjoyed so far:

  • The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
  • Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
  • The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
  • The Four Agreements by Don Miquel Ruiz
  • Dead Poets Society by Nancy Kleinbaum
  • Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly
  • Ocean Power: Poems From the Desert by Ofelia Zepeda

Book Club facilitator, Edge’s Kathi K, says she finds great joy in watching members develop leadership, reading and critical thinking skills. She is proud that our club is a place where all students are welcome, all viewpoints are respectfully considered and friendships grow and flourish.
